I'd like some feedback concerning bamboo flooring?

Please let me know your experiences with bamboo flooring.

I'd like some feedback concerning bamboo flooring?
Most flooring store oversell bamboo floors as one of the hardest flooring available, truth be told they are NOT. It is similar with any natural hardwood flooring, and based on the Janka hardness rating (This is the measure of a wood floors density. Denser floors have a higher rating and are harder to gouge and indent from daily wear) Bamboo is tougher than Oak and almost as hard as Maple which is around 1380 psi. This puts it in the average rating in terms of hardness.

The finish that is applied to the floors however determines the overall wear. It does scratch and any wood floor finish will scratch, aluminum oxide is however the most scratch resistant finish available for a floor today, and there are many versions of aluminum oxide as well. It is important to use a branded version, Treffic aluminum oxide from Germany is an example.

Anyhow, there are now different types of bamboo available, Strand Woven Bamboo for one comes with a Janka hardness rating that is the same as Brazilian Walnut which is about 3000 PSI and is hard to dent, is responsible green building, and looks amazing.

Installation should not be an issue either since Bamboo floors can either be nailed/stapled, glued or floated (same as a laminate floor installation) which can go practically anywhere, except heavily wet areas of course :) Aesthetically speaking, bamboo flooring spans all design themes from traditional to ultra contemporary and certainly provides a distinct look to your home.

And the best part of it all, bamboo is affordable!

I answer the live chat for simplefloors.com so if you need any additional information on this stop by and chat with me, flooring is what I specialize in and I am happy to help out, no strings attached.

Goodluck on your project :)
Reply:Hi. I am a Project Manager for a flooring company for a living. I have sold several bamboo floors. They are VERY problematic with regards to water. If you live in a very wet (humid) climate, steer clear. Also, bamboo floors with a gloss finish scratch VERY easily.

Flooring made out of grass is generally a scary idea in my opinion. I also expect that bamboo will be a very dated look in ten years or so (like avocado green, or brick paver floors, or shag carpet).

To the plus side, bamboo is very hard and resists dents and is kind of cool looking.

DO NOT USE IN ANY WET AREAS LIKE KITCHENS OR BATHROOMS. MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL A TILE LANDING AT ALL DOORWAYS. ***VERY IMPORTANT***

Make sure that your flooring contractor properly acclimates your bamboo flooring by bringing it into the house and OPENING THE CARTONS at least 48 hours (preferably 72) before installation.

Good luck on your new flooring!!
Reply:I have found that bamboo flooring is excellant if you have no pets or kids running on it. It is very sofy and scratches very easy
Reply:We just installed a multil color bamboo floor. Colors very from med oak to mohagany. It looks and feels fantastic. The wood is very thick and durable. Ours can be sanded up to three times. We are really happy.

Where can I puchase mechanically processed Bamboo linen products, such as towels?

This is only for the caustic soda free (in manufacturing at all stages) free products. Some is marketed as Organic or natural bamboo. Most places either deflect the question ("not that bad" for the envirenment"), fail to state source, or missquote certifications (Oeko-Tex).

Have you tried this palce? It's easier to find products on-line than in the mall.

How do I get sticky price sticker residue off bamboo?

Without scratching the bamboo? I bought a bamboo platter and it had a huge sticker on it--I got most of it off, but there remains a sticky patch and I'm afraid if I start scraping it, I'll scratch up the wood. Why they couldn't put on the easily peeled off kind of sticker, I don't know.

Any suggestions for getting the sticky off?

Thanks!

How do I get sticky price sticker residue off bamboo?
eucalyptus oil, it works on metal maybe give it a try!
Reply:I am shocked no one has mentioned Goo Gone. You can get it anywhere- Wal Mart, Lowes, etc. It is often in the household cleaning isles as well as in hardware or automotive isles.

It safely removes sticker residue off of everything I have used it on. I have used it on wicker so I wouldn't think bamboo would be any different. Just saturate a cotton ball with it, place it right on the sticky area for a few minutes and it then just wipe off the sticky. Follow with a damp rag then dry.

You will find you use it for everything! It's great to remove the sticky residue sometimes left on stainless appliances by the sticky protective film sheets they apply at the factory. Ever tried removing the unsightly tags from lamp or appliance cords? You are left w/ sticky residue that attracts dust. Goo Gone takes care of that too.
Reply:lighter fluid ,adhesive remover, WD-40
Reply:A product called E-Z Take Away, I think it's made by the PB Blaster (penetrating oil) people. E-Z Take Away Sticker %26amp; Adhesive Remover. Nothing like it
Reply:Goo Gone or Goof Off. They are the same products basically.

Sometimes just soaking it will loosen the stickey too. It depends on the type of glue. If you don't want to submerge to get the residue off, you can lay a wet cloth on it for a few hours and see if that changes anything.
Reply:try rubbing alcohol it works for me
Reply:Orange oil is great for removing sticky residue... it smells good too!
Reply:eucalyptus oil works on pretty much everything. Just put a bit on a rag and rub it on the residue. It will come off really easily. I have heard that baby oil works too.
Reply:you could use tar remover it removes more than just tar it takes off glue and most things that are sticky

What can i use to kill bamboo plants?

My neighbor has bamboo plants that are like 30 foot tall. They are wild and out of control. Every year they spread out more and more and now they are on myside of the property line fence. They are in my way and destroying my yard. They are litterally taking over.please help!

What can i use to kill bamboo plants?
you have a major issue and you might want to think about making your neighbor take responsibility. This stuff is so bad is website devoted to fighting it lol they call it DAMNboo and have all the ways there to fight it http://www.killingbamboo.org/how-to-kill...

that said basically you can contain with barrier or fight. you can add weed killers but i think that mainly just makes fight take longer.

1 contain

If bamboo has been planted without root barrier and is now growing where you don’t want it, you have several choices. The choices all start out with digging a trench about 3 feet deep around the area where you want the bamboo to grow. You can then install root barrier, pour concrete at least three inches thick or fill the trench with loose gravel. You can rent trench digging machines at equipment rental stores. Root barrier is available from larger nurseries. It comes in very long rolls, should be at least 0.040 inch thick and about three feet high. Expect it to cost between $1 and $2 per foot. If you choose root barrier or concrete, you should leave an inch or two above ground level to make it easier to find the roots that try to escape over the top of the barrier. If you choose the loose rock fill, you will have to use a sharp spade at the beginning of every growing season to cut down into the trench and sever any new roots that try to cross the trench.

2 fight

Rhizomes that have already extended outside their area can be dug up. If that isn’t practical, continue to knock over all new shoots you see for the next few seasons, once the rhizomes are severed from the main plant, and the rhizomes will eventually die.

1. Cut it off. All of the culms (stalks) of bamboo in a clump or grove are interconnected underground by rhizomes (underground stems) unless you have cut them by digging a ditch or cutting a line with a spade. A bamboo grove is usually one single plant, not a group of plants. Many people have the impression that every bamboo culm is a separate “tree.”

If the bamboo in your yard has come across from your neighbor’s yard, separate your grove from his by cutting the connecting rhizomes, which are usually quite shallow. If you don’t, and his part is healthy and vigorous, the rhizomes in your part will still be supported by the photosynthesis in the leaves of his part, and your efforts will be in vain. On the other hand, if you do manage to kill your part with a herbicide you may also kill his part. Lawsuits or at least hard feelings can result.

Therefore, be sure to isolate the portion you want to keep from the portion you want to kill. Cutting rhizomes with a spade or a saw will do the trick if you do it every year. If the growth is old, you may need to use a mattock or a digging bar the first time. Digging a ditch and putting in a barrier* is a more permanent solution.

2. Cut it down

Cut the grove to the ground. All of it. If there is any part you want to keep, see (1).

3. Water and fertilize the area, to cause new growth.

4. Cut it down again. And again.

New shoots will come up from the rhizomes. Break them off or cut them off with pruning shears. Keep doing this until no more shoots come up. This will exhaust the energy stored in the rhizomes underground. Without green leaves to photosynthesize and produce new energy, they will no longer be able to send up new shoots. The rhizomes will be left behind, but will rot away.

That’s all you need to do. You need a saw, a pair of pruning shears, and patience, and maybe a spade and/or mattock. The widely advertised herbicides don’t work well on bamboo, probably because so much of the plant is underground. Since cutting the bamboo down will do the trick, and you have to cut the bamboo down anyway to remove it from your yard, herbicides are a waste of time and money in this case.
Reply:You can Roundup what sprouts in your yard, but bamboo is one of the toughest plants in the world. The methods of eradicating it wouldn't work, if the bamboo has a home base in your neighbor's yard. It will just keep coming back.

The bamboo in our yard in Hawaii died, but that was because the whole yard was denied water for a year. It was kind of a desert area, so reverted to bare dirt.
Reply:Round-up will most definetly kill it if you get all the sprouts. It will kill what ever it touches so be aware of what it touches. There are different strengths available as well. If Round up doesn't kill it then you have martian bamboo...:)) In addition Roundup dissipates in a day or two so you can replant quickly if needed.
Reply:Yup Roundup

But not ALL bamboo is invasive!!!!!!!! There are hundreds of non invasive clumping bamboo that are well behaved, even in cold climates (Fragesia sp.)

The other answerers should not tell everybody its bad and will ruin your yard, you just dont know there are differnt kinds of bamboo that will not do that
Reply:fire. Bamboo is a pest and so are your neighboors. Bamboo should be planted in containers. You may have grounds to make them take responsiblity for the bamboo in your yard. Bleach may work, give it a try, otherwise you will have to dig the bamboo out, constantly
Reply:machine gun. or mortar. flamethrower. hand grenade. all of these will pretty much demolish bamboo. if those products are inaccessible try digging the bamboo up at the roots.
Reply:Just have a word with your neighbour. If you can't do that cut the plants short and cover them with plastic bags. Bamboos love water so if they can't get it they'll die.
Reply:Maybe if you have me over I can kill them. I never have any luck with bamboo. (btw who the heck ever said they were easy to care for... they lied :( )

Sorry, I didn't help much.
Reply:round-up kills most anything--grass---weeds--small trees--brush.--it's worth a try
Reply:bleach or EXTRA streagth weed killer.. I had the same problem last summer and it was so bad that we put a drive way over it ..and it still went throught..but this worked :)

Do you have to keep your bamboo in soil and how do u fertalize it?

my moms friend just gave her a bamboo plant in a vase with just water in it then i did some research and some sites say to use soil and some sites dont then some say to fertalize and some sites dont so if anybody truly knows then please help

Do you have to keep your bamboo in soil and how do u fertalize it?
If your moms plant is in plain water with a few marbles at the bottom of the vase your mom doesn't have a bamboo plant, but a "look alike" plant. These plants usually have three or more bamboo looking stalks in a vase. If this is what your mother has then no special care is required. Leave it in a sunny window, and make sure it has enough water in the vase. When the water gets cloudy, or green from algae change the water.

Real bamboo seedlings would be in soil, and is in the grass family.
Reply:i have a pot of lucky bamboo I have had for 9 years it is huge and it lives in only water and rocks , bamboo spreads and quickly so remember that when planting
Reply:Bambu will spread rapidly. Put it in a shallow pot with dirt and watch how fast it fills it up. Water often and well.
Reply:Please say LUCKY bamboo because it is not bamboo at all. It is a slow growing lilly of the Draceana genus. You can plant it in soil if you want, it will not speard like crazy.

Even REAL bamboo will not spead like crazy if it is clumping bamboo. Bamboo got an invasive reputation by people planting running bamboo and knowing nothing about its characteristics.

If you would like more information here is a good link( sorry no "lucky" info) http://www.boonut.info/

How do I get rid of Bamboo?

I have Bamboo in my back yard and it is spreading. It came form my neighbor but now it is taking over. How do I stop or contain it?

How do I get rid of Bamboo?
You have to dig up as much of it as you can then go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a product called TRIOX vegetation killer. Pour it all over the dirt or wherever you have a problem with the bamboo, it should take care of it completely. You wont be able to plant anything in this area for several weeks. I had a bamboo problem at my other house and could not get rid of it except by doing what I just mentioned. Good luck.
Reply:Let me know if you really find a way?
Reply:for astart your neighbour is partly responsible for growing it in the first place. with their co-operation you will have success as i have. cut the whole thing down to about ground level.when the plant sends up new growth spray it with roundup, wait ten days and spray it again,it will shoot again because it has secondary survival factors, you have to get the roundup into the plants system by repeating the process after each time it sends up new growth, you will win in the end and it may take 3or 4 sprays so be diligent and don,t slacken off. remember you have to treet the whole plant
Reply:dig deep! backhoe type dig hole !

the roots go deep and good luck containing it ! best bet would be a piece of plastic in the ground about 2 feet deep!
Reply:burn it or chop it up but there might be ticks in there.
Reply:you cant it will always grow back the roots are deep and they spread quickly if you poision them they will only come back and you just waisted your money. The best bet is to control it and not let them grow. Yet more yard work
Reply:whoa! i cant believe this-we planted some in our backyard, and it is so sickly-how do you all get it to grow??????

What can I use to waterproof bamboo?

I'd like to use some bamboo poles that I have to make a wall for a shower. They will be getting wet pretty regularly. What would be the best stuff to use to seal and protect it from rot or mildew.

What can I use to waterproof bamboo?
after your sure they're completely dry spray on 2-3 coats of good polyurethane.
Reply:Bamboo is naturally waterproof but you probably could coat it with polyurethane......
Reply:A friend of mine made a hot tub out of bamboo, well the sides actually.were lined with bamboo, as the bamboo was not for structural use but decorative. No over the counter product was suitable for immersion of the bamboo in water. He finally found a company who waterproofs concrete to spray the insides of the tub with a clear plastic used in swimming pools that have a decorative pattern in the tiles on the bottom. It worked for him, but it also caused a problem with algea now having crevices to grow in undisturbed, which I suspect will also be a problem in your shower, crevices where water will stay for long periods of time. Waterproofing the bamboo may be the least of your problems. Cleaning the crevices may be almost impossible.
Reply:How you install the bamboo will be very important. Your idea is fascinating, if you are doing what I think. If the poles are installed next to each other to create the interior of the shower you must first make sure that durarock is installed as the base. I don't recommend that you install it over the existing tile.

Each stick will have to be precoated with polyurethane and then reapplied after it is installed. There will be small spaces between the poles. You will have to decide how you plan to treat that area either with caulking or grout.

I would recommend a marine grade poly. Don't use an inexpensive product from a local home improvement store.

Good Luck!

Do you HAVE to have a bamboo mat for rolling sushi?

Today I went to the japanese grocery store and baught some rice vinigar and some sushi rice and roasted seaweed. I dont have the wooden bowl, flat spoon thingy or the bamboo mat.

Can I still make sushi?

Do you HAVE to have a bamboo mat for rolling sushi?
You can use a dish towel for rolling your nori maki
Reply:Yes. just roll it between your hands after wrapping with saran wrap.
Reply:The wood is good b/c the sticky, sticky rice won't stick to it when wet.

You might could try using plastic wrap.... you use the mat to assist you in rolling the sushi up nice and tight. Plastic wrap might suffice instead, but take care to wrap tightly.
Reply:Sure you can! The mat helps get the roll nice and tight, but you can do the same thing with wax paper. You might need to replace the wax paper after a couple of rolls, as it gets a bit soggy, but it works just fine. I made sushi at a friends house once and didn't have my mat-the wax paper worked so well, that I often don't bother with the mat.
Reply:idk i dont eat sushi...yukk! no offence but u prolly dont have to have a bamboo mat u can just use another thing similar to it
Reply:Yes or you end up with jacked up sushi. It won't roll correctly or tightly.

Go to your local bookstore like Books a million or Barnes %26amp; nobles. They often sell sushi making kits for less than 10 dollars. YOu will get the book, chopsticks and the all important mat.

Once you use the mat you'll never use anything else.
Reply:Sure you can. You can use a damp cloth covered with saran wrap instead of the bamboo mat.

When you make the rice, and pour the sugar/rice vinegar mixture over-- use a shallow basin or bowl, toss the rice with a large spoon, and ideally, fan it so that the liquid evaporates and the rice doesn't get mushy. Don't over mix- that's what the wooden paddle and bowl are for --but you don't need that.

How do i cut and install bamboo in a home as trim?
You will have to drill small holes in the spots you want to put the nails.

Be sure the bamboo is cured good and pre-finished.

Reply:wow...tough one here...as a sheetmetalman I would think you could cut the bamboo in halves lengthwise and miter the same as you would any other top trim, bottom trim, side trim, etc....maybe dry bamboo would hold glue for mitered corners, etc.....good luck

Has anyone installed Lumber Liquidators Supreme Bamboo Floor?

I'm doing a new home and was wondering has anyone used Lumber Liquidators Supreme Bamboo floor or their engineered wood?

Has anyone installed Lumber Liquidators Supreme Bamboo Floor?
Yes I have it. My husband and I installed it ourselves. We've had it for about a year now. It did get scratched BUT NOT from my TWO dogs. It got scratched last Halloween when our neighbor's drink friends decided they would dance on our new bamboo floors in their army boots with ROCKS embedded in the soles!!!

If that hadn't happened, the floor would be in great shape. The consistency is like wood. It will ding when you drop metal things like screwdrivers, but overall it's held up really well. The small dings are hidden by pattern of the bamboo.

The best thing I like about the bamboo is the even temperature. My mom had maple floors and that were soooo cold in the winter time. The bamboo stays cool in summer and a tolerable cool in winter. If I moved, I would get the bamboo again.

P.S. Our local Lumber Liquidator carried a decorative border that's really cool. It has diamond shapes in it. Email me if you want to see a picture.

Duhryan3- I tried to email you but got an error msg. It said You email is not confimed and can not send?? Anyway, we went with the Morning Star. Send me an email address where I can attach pictures and I will send them.
Reply:Yes, I had this bamboo flooring for a year now, and, protect our house from extreme coldness compared to oak flooring that we had before. Super strong than any hard wood flooring! Report It
Reply:I am not specifically sure about L,L Bamboo. But I will tell you when it comes to Bamboo make sure it is in the 6' / 72" long boards. When manufactures make Bamboo flooring they take the bottom 6' of the chute and make premium floor with it.... the bottom of the chute is the oldest and hardest part. Everything above that they cut into 3' / 36" lengths. Most if not all of the wood floors you buy today are coming from eco-managed forests. Ones that are allowed to grow 20-30 yrs...That being said because Bamboo matures at 5 yrs of age instead of 35-50 yrs for Oak, most of the Bamboo you buy (if Premium) will be denser than your standard builder grade Oak floor. You can still buy Old growth Oak floors that will way out preform Bamboo, but are very costly. So all that being said Bamboo is a great floor if bought properly. Do your homework and ask them where they buy their Bamboo from.. Obviously Lumber Liquidators does'nt grow and manufacture themselves, so get more info on who they buy from...Good luck
Reply:Yes I have installed it for a customer, and the next morning we ripped it out BECAUSE, their dogs ran around on it over night and scratched the HELL out of it. They told the home owner, who had purchased the material, that it "was tougher than hard wood floors". I BEG TO DIFFER!!! Store location:Olathe, KS.

I have a problem with Japanese bamboo encroching on my garden. Does anyone know of a good remedy to stop it?

This is not a true bamboo, but a member of the buckwheat family or so I am told.It spreads by underground runners (rhysomes) and is wildly prolific.I would prefer a non-herbicide method. I have tried cutting the stalks and pouring bleach into the hollow stalks. That has been only mildly successful.

I have a problem with Japanese bamboo encroching on my garden. Does anyone know of a good remedy to stop it?
Yes a barrier would be the best option but i would use copper or atleast a barrier with a copper coating since copper has been proven to inhibit root growth
Reply:You are poisoning the ground with your bleach. The very best way is to dig down along the edge of your garden at least 12" then insert a barrier like thick plastic or even better, galvanized steel or aluminum sheathing. You can get all of these items from Menards.

I was watching Peoples Court where there was a case of a neighbor planting just that plant and their neighbor spent a grand to keep it out of their yard. The judge ordered them to pay their neighbors for the "enclosure" of the bamboo rhysomes by doing exactly what it says above. The judge asked if the remedy worked and the plaintif said it worked great but was expencive. So....where ever the bamboo is, enclose it first, then protect your garden.

Good luck! I would like to know what happens.

By the way....the aluminum sheathing can be found in the roofing department!
Reply:Flamethrowers worked in the forties, i'm not sure about now.
Reply:Buy a Panda Bear. They just love the stuff.
Reply:To stop the spread of bamboo roots place a solid physical barrier (metal, wood) in to the ground to a depth of about 24". Slant the bottom of the barrier about 10 degrees toward the bamboo trees so the roots are encouraged to grow up towards the surface where they stop.

Is there anything to put in bamboo water to make it healthier?

My bamboo is doing really well. The tips of the leaves are brittle after awhile, but it's growing like a weed. Can I put anything in it's water to make it even healthier?

Is there anything to put in bamboo water to make it healthier?
well putting bottled water for them is what they should have and it will make them grow really well, also i have been putting this stuff that i found in the flea market called green green and it seem to have been working very well it just gives them more nutrients..
Reply:You can buy some bamboo fertilizer. The only one I can think of at the moment is called Green Green but I'm sure if you do a search for bamboo fertilizer you'll come up with more.

Can you make furniture out of bamboo?

Can you make anything useful or decorative out of bamboo growing in your own yard? We have plenty in our yard and would love to build something out of it. Or does it have to go through technological processes before turning into furniture?

Can you make furniture out of bamboo?
Sure! just let it dry well (about 6 weeks) and then you can treat it with a spray-on clear coat to help keep it from cracking as much. It does tend to split when drilled or nailed, so be careful of that.
Reply:it depends on what you have planned. if you're going for curved lines, form them and let it dry. if straight lines. you'll need to dry it first. no chemical process needed for either
Reply:Yes, You sure can, but you'd need to lash it together with a strong twine, or if it's of a good size you could drill holes and use screws and nuts, but only in hidden places.
Reply:because it is a bit brittle and finicky when using nails or screws its best to tie your joints together with a rope of your choice and some glue. there's also the cut joint where the two crossing pieces are notched in a way that allows each piece to receive the other piece for added strength once they are tied together

Reply:Bamboo Green Curry Salmon Recipe

This recipe adds so many flavors to a filet of salmon. You will experience spicy flavors from the green chilli and fresh tastes from the basil that go very well together. The key ingredient is the CurrySimple green curry sauce that is made in Thailand with fresh, natural ingredients (Coconut Milk, Green chilli, Galangal, Lemongrass, Shallot, Garlic, etc). Having the sauce already prepared saves about 30 minutes of prep time and you do not have to use multiple canned ingredients or a complicated recipe.

How do you use Green Green Bamboo fertalizer?

My dad Just bought me a Bamboo tree and it has food and the directions are in Japanese and i dont know how much to use ot says it lasts a year but i dont know how much to use help please!

How do you use Green Green Bamboo fertalizer?
Bamboo is a monocotyledon plant, meaning their veins in the leaves run parallel and are not considered to be a woody plant. A tree on the other hand for the most part are dicotyledons, meaning their veins for the most part are net shapped and are defined as a a woody plant. Bamboo plants are in the family of plants called graminea thus they are directly related to grass. Bamboos are giant grasses , many of wich are native to the orient. Given that bamboos are related to grasses, you would fertilize them with a grass fertilizer . The rate you would use would be much greater than that you would use for your home lawn because home lawns are usually mowed at a lower heigth, thier roots are not as deep, and the soil fertility is not as extensive. Given this information ferttilize less frequently but more quality. The amount of fertilizer would vary considerably depending on the heigth of the bamboo.Trees on the other hand especially well established ones do not require frequent fertilization as they will sustain themselves longer than grasses. Make sure the bamboo plant is watered on a regular basis. You need to mimic the natural enviroment where they come from, think monsoons, warm, humid weather especially during the summer.

How to make a glider with bamboo as its skeleton?

I want to make aglider using bamboo as its skeleton. If can, I want to use polystyrene as its body. The glider must fly as long as it can be. If possible, I want the glider to land smoothly and perfectly. My problem now is I don't know how to launch it and make sure that it can maintain its fly longer. I've planned to produce a glider in astronaut shaped. but I confuse whether it can fly or not.

How to make a glider with bamboo as its skeleton?
Go to the top of a building and let go a test model.

For better wind conditions try the inside of a gym first and drop it from a high place or practice throwing it by hand.

Sounds great idea ...good luck.

How to fix/ cover scratches on bamboo floor?

I moved my piano and one of the wheel didn't turn and left a long scratch on the floor, not deep but visible. The floor is made of solid bamboo, not laminate. It's semi-gloss.

How to fix/ cover scratches on bamboo floor?
polish them again
Reply:just replace the scratched part. or maybe use sand paper to remove it then apply wax. but the best would be if you'll place your piano there so no one will ever see the scratch.

How often should i water my hanging trailing bamboo?

i heard its not really bamboo but some type of grass but sold as trailing bamboo.. should i water it every day?

How often should i water my hanging trailing bamboo?
Every plant you are raising needs to be pampered and taken care of.....which means that u should water it everyday, depending upon the climate because on hot days...they tend to dry up and wilt..which indicates watering it twice or whenever u see it wilted. On normal days....just water it in the early evening or before sunrise. It depends largely on the soil so.....u have to regulate the water content by clear observation.

My doubt about the chinese bamboo plant and wind chimes?

can the chinese bamboo plant be kept in any corner of the house?is there any specific place where it should be kept like the south-west part or north-east part etc of the house? My friends say so.and which is the exact place that the wind chimes should be placed in a house according to the feng shui?

My doubt about the chinese bamboo plant and wind chimes?
Hi There ! I'm a Feng Shui professional. Talking about Bamboo or any plants, should always be placed in the East Direction of your Living room or South East , Never in the Bedroom or Kitchen. Remember to take off all yellowing leaves as this activates the Shar Chi which is also Bad Energy. Bamboo is the Best as this signifies wealth to the Chinese. Plants in the East is for Health and in The South East is for wealth and when placed in the South it makes you popular....you can email me with any questions on ferrus22@hotmail.com ....talking about wind chimes there many kings ...3, 4 , 5, 6, 7, 8 rods hollow and solid and are used for various needs stay away from them as they are dangerous to play around with

if you are really interested in Feng Shui you need to get to basics ...its all about balancing the elements in and around the home ..never should you have one element which overpowers the other

Reply:feng shui is all about feeling right, whichever direction seem right to you just do it. feng shui is not one size fits all, not only it depends on how your house sits, it also depending on the people living in it.

if you aren't sure or knows nothing about feng shui, don't do anything, it can do a lot of harm than good
Reply:traditionnaly, the wind chimes should be place in the front-main door which have the purpose to eliminate all the bad soul ...but about the bamboo plant it should be in the place that face the sun first when the sun rises%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;that:s all i know%26gt;%26gt; but it can be varied%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Okay i bought a lucky bamboo?

Okay i bought a lucky bamboo a glass jar and a packet of stone pebles:

1. do i have to change the water completely if so how long and how much.

2. What are all the things to do when caring for it?

Okay i bought a lucky bamboo?
I use river stones (they add minerals to the water); crystals do not. For many years I add water when low, change water completely and wash the jar when not smelling fresh,

and periodically I wash all the stones, when cloudy, that is all. ENJOY!
Reply:I have two lucky bamboo sticks in water crystals for over a year already. The crystals, once they are filled with water will for one hold your bamboo upright in a wider container and secondly will slowly release the needed water back to the plants. You just need to add more water when you see the crystals shrinking (from releasing the water to your bamboo). If you use the crystals in a glass container I also think it looks decorative. I find the bamboo to be one of the lowest maintenance plants to have in my house. Living in Arizona I don't put the plant directly in the window but about 6-8 feet away from the window. If you choose to use the water crystals, you should be able to find some in gardening stores. I purchased mine from Watersorb:

Enjoy your lucky bamboo!
Reply:well, i chnage the water once every week and wash the pebbles when they get cloudy and to enhance the growth of lucky bamboo i also put a special jelly in the jar.

Flute that sounds like a bamboo flute?

Like which type of flute sounds

more like one of those asian bamboo flutes.?

Cuz if I can find one, I might wanna start playing it.

Flute that sounds like a bamboo flute?
Well, the Japanese flute is called a "shakuhachi" and if you want to play that you could probably find one.

As far as other flutes that sound like them, usually you have to be really good at silver flute or whatever to make it sound like other flutes. Your best bet would be to find the actual Eastern flute you want to play.
Reply:they have the pan flute which is bamboo pieces cut to different lengths. Back in the 80's they used to advertise an artist and his pan flute...the stupid commercial came on everyother commercial, but i guess it did its job b/c her it is 27 yrs later and i still remember the damn thing enough to answer your question! lol
Reply:Why don't you just get a shakuhachi?

They are beautiful.
Reply:in addition to the shakuhachi (Japan) you might look into:

# Dizi - China

# Fujara - Slovakia

# Maceno - Bolivia

# Muhusenoi - Venezuela

# Ney - Egyptian - Egypt

# Ney -Persian - Iran

# Ney - Turkish - Turkey

# Ohe Hano Ihu - Hawaii

# Pensol- Malaysia

# Selingup - Sarawak

# Selingut - Sarawak

# Tongali - Sarawak

And the Native American Flute of North America.

All of these will give you the more woody and breathy sound known in Asian playing.

Western flutes (even wooden flutes) will tend to produce a clearer sound best known in traditional Irish music.

How to grow and control bamboo?

bamboo can be a problem on residential property if not grown and controlled. What are the problems?

How to grow and control bamboo?
I've got some on my property and I wish I hadn't. It grows like a wildfire and is just about impossible to kill. It can send new shoots out many yards from the original plant. It is very difficult to control, to the point where I don't know that I've ever seen it done successfully.

The link below has some suggestions:
Reply:Cut them and sell them as a novalty huck finn fishin poles.
Reply:It is way easy to grow in warm climes but will spin out of control when you least expect it. The 'roots' grow just under ground and will run up to ten feet before sprouting upwards, (about every six inches) along the runner. Compound this about twenty different directions and you will be living in a forest before you know it. The only way I have ever seen it successfully controled was by 'trenching' around it about 10 inches down and making sure you have found and pulled up all runners on the oppisite side of the trench.

Looks cool if you have an asian theme in your home, though.
Reply:It spreads by undreground root system and can take over an area and is hard to control and get rid of

How do i look after bamboo?

I bought 2 sticks of bamboo and one died. They are in the same pot I don't understand. someone please help me!

How do i look after bamboo?
Hi, Your doo is lovely, absolutely lovely! The roots of the bamboo that died ,could have been damaged. It's nothing you did, I'm sure. Add some ,"Lucky Bamboo Fertilizer" It's a 2-2-2. Also the amount of light, the intensity of light, and the amount of time it spends in the light affects the amount of new growth it gets. Don't give up, just put it in a warmer area, with more light.Good Luck,Bye
Reply:Give them the best light you have in your house. Water when the top inch of the soil is dry. Feed once a month.
Reply:with love and care..!
Reply:I wish mine would die..we have cut it down, plowed it under, burned it, put weed killer on it, and it is still coming back like crazy..Be careful what you wish for..It only takes one plant..

I just bought a lucky bamboo last month?

and some stalks started having some white stuff spots on em, and I heard that theyre some kind of parasites and the stalks are really starting to look very unhealthy. how can i get rid of these white parasites on my plant. my bamboo is on soil by the way. thanks

I just bought a lucky bamboo last month?
I had the same thing. Natural method= mix a few drops of liquid dish soap with a few tablespoons of water. Paint the soap mixture on the white fuzzy bugs. You have to keep at it until you don't see any new bugs for awhile....or......chemical method= go to your local nursery and ask for the pesticide granuals that mix into the soil. They'll know what you want. You only need a couple of teaspoons, depending on the size of the pot.

I've had my lucky bamboo for 5 years and it's still in water!
Reply:Mix up some soap water and either spray or brush it on those parasites (woolly aphids, I think). That should kill them. Good luck.
Reply:It's worth a try to drag the leaves of your potted plant through sudsy water. You may find it necessary to do it a number of times over a couple of weeks. Let the sudsy water dry on the leaves. You might even allow the soapy water to wet the soil. I have always thought these were meant to be grown in a vase of water. A lot of Chinese restaurants use them as table decorations and they do very well in only water. If you do this, change the water now and then, and don't let it evaporate.
Reply:Sounds like mealy bugs to me. They can overwhelm a plant. Like a previous poster said, dunking it every week or so for about a month in soapy water should fix you up. Rub off the larger masses of bugs.

In the future when buying a plant, try to give it a close inspection. I was close to buying some things at Lowe's a few weeks ago and noticed a few plants covered in mealy bugs. I asked to speak to the garden center manager, and showed them to him. I told him he was going to lose a lot of plant material AND have some really pissed off customers. He shrugged his shoulders, and I didn't buy any plants there.
Reply:doesn't sound like it was very lucky for your bamboo???

Where can I buy some bamboo to plant as a fence cover? I live in Dallas.?

The people who live behind me are kind of unfriendly-I thought I'd just plant bamboo along the back fence. I rent, so I don't want to put up a wooden fence.

Where can I buy some bamboo to plant as a fence cover? I live in Dallas.?
"Keeping it in check" is the hard part. You need to check out "clump type" bamboos rather than "running type" bamboos. I have running types here and sometimes a new growth will pop up 10 feet away from the parent clump (which is now huge).

You might first check ou the Dallas Arboretum. They have an entire garden dedicated to various kids of bamboo. You'll see some about 3 ft tall, others 30 ft tall, so don't buy something generic without knowing what you're getting yourself into!

Also, bamboo canes only live for about 3 years, so once it's established, you need to prune out the dead stuff every year, and that can be hard work, trust me!

Good luck!
Reply:I'm glad to help (I love to talk plants!), but don't think a driveway is enough to stop a running bamboo! I know it won't from personal experience.

And do visit the arboretum. It's a great place! Report It
Reply:Bamboo's pretty invasive - you may want to make sure you aren't going to tick your neighbors off by planting it, as well as making sure it's okay with your landlord (since you rent).

There might be some other bushes that would work as a screen that aren't as problematic as bamboo...
Reply:Assuming the fence is a chain-link fence, hence the need for privacy, they make inexpensive inserts for them. Cheaper than the cost of buying, planting and maintaining the bamboo and then removing it when it takes over the yard as would ornamental grasses. The strips are quick, cheap and easily removable. They come in colors and are available at garden, hardware and fencing stores.
Reply:most nursery places sell this but buyer be ware they will sell you the wrong thing because some can go up to 40 feet high
Reply:Theres plenty of bamboo around the Dallas area, just get your shovel %26amp; dig some of it up, replant it at your fenceline. It'll grow.
Reply:Bamboo will spread all over your yard. It will take over your yard. I would do some ornamental grasses. They grow really fast and big. The bamboo might upset your landlord and it's very hard to dig up.

How should I install new bamboo flooring over existing hardwood?

I just posted another question about this but now I have another. I'm about to install bamboo flooring. I'd like to put it over my existing hardwood floor (which has been covered with carpet since long before I owned the house). I just took up the carpet and am prepping the floor. One problem is that the existing floor squeaks, ALL OVER. Does anyone have recommendations for eliminating the squeaks before I install the new stuff? I've run some nails and screws into the joists and they seem to help but it seems like I'll need a ton of them for this.

Also, when I install the new stuff, which is tongue and groove, should I install it perpendicular to the existing flooring or parallel? The existing floor is already perpendicular to the floor joists.

Thanks for the suggestions.

How should I install new bamboo flooring over existing hardwood?
you want to glue it down. i put a nail in every 4th or 5th board. you can run it ny direction you want, when the glue sets you will have no more squeeks or kreeks!
Reply:Because hardwood flooring is looked upon as such an asset to property values (in part because of the structural strength they lend), I would consider refurbishing them, as opposed to covering them. I would seek the advice of a flooring contractor to see what can be done about the squeaking, and also see about refinishing the flooring too.

Bamboo is a great choice for floors. But, in the long run, original hardwood flooring that has been refurbished might give you a better return on investment.
Reply:carefully; get professional instructions which generally are available from the Home Center where you buy the flooring.
Reply:IKEA has bamboo flooring the cheapest I have found you might want to look it up if you have one around
Reply:Re nail the entire floor, or just the bad spots and traffic areas, angle the nails about 20` alternating back and forth (angled left - angled right) so they wont squeak, use 6d ring shank nails or screw nails, use a nail gun for speed or get a 28 oz framing hammer. Screws work good but it takes more time. you can run the new bamboo with the old direction. Against if the old is too uneven. They should give you some felt or foam pad about 1/8 inch for squeak control with the new bamboo.

I install it here in the Seattle area for $4.70 per square foot.

Best fertilizer for my lucky bamboo plant?

I have two lucky bamboo plants and I was wondering what kind of fertilizer I should give them. Any particular brands or products that you can recommend would be helpful.

Best fertilizer for my lucky bamboo plant?
Lucky bamboo doesn't require fertilizer. I wouldn't recommend using one, it'll rot the plant.
Reply:Never fertilize lucky bamboos!!! Just tap water is enough. And if your really concerned about the type of water, then rainwater is always the best.
Reply:I have had this plant for about 10 years and never fertilized it yet, just wash off and replace water every 2-3 weeks.....Nuf Said

On our bamboo we use a fertilizer called "Green Green."

You can get it at oriental markets or from the linkie below.

Also don't put your bamboo in direct sunlight, it will turn yellow.

Reply:Every time I mix a batch of Miracle Grow for my houseplants I just finish filling the bamboo to the top with some of the leftovers.
Reply:You do not have to feed it anything but water and it will grow fine. If you add other things you may kill it or damage it so it stops growing
Reply:A bit of plant food dissolved in water.
Reply:The growers/wholesale nurseries that produce these plants where I live use seaweed emulsion. Put in 1 -2 drops every time you add water

Will aerating get rid of bamboo?

if i rent a mechine and aerate my backyard will this get rid of bamboo? how deep are the roots?

Will aerating get rid of bamboo?
It's hard to get rid of bamboo(unless you are trying to get it to grow) You'll have to get rid of all the plant roots and all they propagate by under ground rizones !
Reply:Aerating will not kill it. Digging , or easier, Roundup, will. The rhizomes are not deep, 6 to 12 inchs depending on species and maturity.

Next time plant a clumping bamboo. It is NOT invasive and will stay in a small area. People assume ALL bamboo is invasive and the truth is there are several cold tolerant species (Fargesia) and hundreds of semitropical clumping bamboo that are fantastic to grow and very well behaved
Reply:Aerating will only make it worse. My experience has been to burn it out. Contact a landscape company for other suggestions.
Reply:No, the only way to get rid of bamboo is to dig it up and keep digging every time you see a new shoot.

How do I make my bamboo plant grow bigger?

I have a small, indoor bamboo plant that has been the same size (about 6 or 7 inches tall) for the past 3 years. I have heard to place it in a larger container to make it grow bigger, but even when I do, I still fill the container with stones and feel like it's stunted. How can I make it grow bigger? Is it possible?

How do I make my bamboo plant grow bigger?
There is a commerical plant food just for lucky bamboo. It is called Green Green and comes in a tiny vial. My Mom buys it at her local flea market where they sell the bamboo but you can probably find it online. One drop of the food when you water your bamboo. My Mom's plants grow so well that they inevitably reach the ceiling!

"Like any other plant, Lucky Bamboo needs light, water, and nutrients to survive. It will do better with little attention than if you fuss over it, however. This plant likes to be admired but not pampered. Here are some guidelines to help you give it the best care:

LIGHT: Lucky Bamboo will do best with moderate levels of indirect light. In the natural world it grows in dense shade under the thick rainforest canopy of equatorial Africa. Direct light -- such as a sunny windowsill -- is too strong for it. Lucky Bamboo will tolerate little light more easily than too much light. You can even keep Lucky Bamboo in rooms with no natural light; just move it to a brighter (but not in direct light!) location for three or four days every few weeks. If you want your Lucky Bamboo to grow, however, it will need to be at the higher end of its light-range. It may survive very low light, but it won’t put out new leaves or get any taller.

WATER: Lucky Bamboo grows very well in water, but it doesn’t like the chemicals – chlorine and fluoride, to name just two – present in most tap water. Filtered water or rain water will keep your Lucky Bamboo healthy longer. If you don’t have a water filtration system, plan ahead and run tap water into a container the day before you water your Lucky Bamboo plants, and let it sit out, uncovered, at least overnight or for 24 hours to allow the chemicals to disperse.

Keep an eye on the water level in your Lucky Bamboo container, and add a little more as it gets down to about half-full; how often will depend on the size of your arrangement and the humidity in your home. Every week or so, pour all the water out and refill the container with fresh water.

If you happen to have an aquarium in your home, save some of the dirty aquarium water when you clean it, and use that to water your Lucky Bamboo. Your fish may be sensitive to all the microscopic stuff that builds up in the water, but your Lucky Bamboo will love it!

Lucky Bamboo grown in soil should be keep slightly moist, not soaking wet. Don’t allow it to dry out completely. And don’t go by whether or not the surface is dry – often the soil will still be damp a half-inch or so below the surface. Stick your finger in the soil: if it feels dry a full inch down, then it’s all right to water.

NUTRIENTS: Lucky Bamboo is pretty hardy, and often grows happily for years just in pure water, but it may need some kind of food eventually. If your plant gets spindly and pale after you’ve had it for a while, try moving it a little closer to a light source and give it some very diluted plant food. However, if it turns yellow shortly after you bring it home that’s usually a sign it was over-fertilized before you purchased it. Change the water immediately, and don’t fertilize at all for several months.

The best time to feed your Lucky Bamboo is when you change the water. Just add a couple of drops of aquarium plant food to the water you use to refill the container. You can also use a very dilute solution of a standard plant food like Miracle Gro. For water-grown plants, that means using 1/10th the recommended strength (i.e., if it says 10 drops per gallon, use only 1 drop per gallon for your Lucky Bamboo). If your Lucky Bamboo is growing in soil, you can use a stronger solution.

Don’t feed every time you change the water! Every 2 months—or longer-- is often enough. Water-grown plants do not need to be fed as frequently as soil-grown plants, and feeding too much or too frequently is more harmful to plants than not feeding enough! Lucky Bamboo is naturally a very slow-growing plant, so don’t assume it needs to be fed just because it doesn’t seem to be growing."

What are your thoughts on bamboo in the garden?

I bought some yesterday and its the spreading not the clumping kind, the man at the nursery said I would be able to control it, i wanted the clumping kind initially because I heard it spreads allot slower, iam trying to create a privacy screen ...but in reviewing the whole situation, Im thinking that maybe I dont want any bamboo at all because maybe it will prohibit the sun from getting to my raised bed garden, I should probably just wait awile and mull it over... any thoughts?

What are your thoughts on bamboo in the garden?
Most bamboo spreads and believe it or not hard to keep it under control unless you spend a lot of time in your garden area.....you can keep it from spreading so much by putting it in cheap containers or buckets and bury them....Once you decide where you want it....To help figure out if your raised garden bed will be getting sun......Watch the sun as the days comes and goes.....Some get the morning sun...some the afternoon sun.....and some all day sun......If you watch you will notice when shade hits the raised garden area......Until you can decide about how much sun will be blocked by the bamboo........This is solved pretty easy.......

Take your bamboo in it's container and sit it out in the place where you was thinking....and watch how much sun is blocked from you garden area.....This might take a couple of days....but it might be worth it in the long run.....You can move the bamboo around until you are happy where the sun is on your garden.....Then plant your bamboo....pot and all to keep the spreading under control.......Good Luck !!
Reply:First of all take it back and get the clumping kind. Unless you put in rhizome barrier it will spread everywhere, and both you and your neighbors will regret the day you ever planted it.

However, the clumping kind are NOT invasive, I don't care what anyone says. All it takes to control it is to dig around it a few times a year to break away any roots that may be spreading the clump too wide, and then break any new shoots that have appeared where you do not want them. Depending on the type you can even control the spread with 12x12 pavers or even plant the bamboo in raised beds. None of this takes alot of effort and it makes for a beautiful privacy screen.

Now, depending on where your raised beds, how high you desire your privacy screen and where you are located will determine what type of clumper you should purchase. There are many that grow only between 10 to 15 feet tall, and many that grow upwards to 60 feet tall. There are also clumpers that will not survive temps below 30F and some mountain clumpers that take temps to about -15F. So again, not knowing exactly where you are and what you desire doesn't help any.

My suggestion is to not talk to your local gardener but instead talk to a bamboo expert who can help you make the right choices.
Reply:Naughty man at the nursery!!!! You will not be able to control it if it is planted straight into the ground. Also the spreading type grow taller than the clump type. If you do decide to keep it, then to help control it, you will need to dig a hole and line the sides with plastic to stop it spreading.

It will stop some of the sun from your beds but bamboo is fairly 'airy' so will let some through. You could always cut a few canes out to filter more light through. The clump type by the way is tighter growing so probably will have blocked more light out anyway.

Anything you plant as a screen will block out the light. It all depends how tall you want the screen to be. If just a short one is needed, then go for some evergreen grasses maybe??

Or maybe a latticed fence for something taller?? If you like the bamboo idea still what about an open structured bamboo fence??

Hope this helps :-)
Reply:I always advise against bamboo of any kind because it is so very invasive, even the clumping kind. As a landscaper of 20 years, I have made lots of money removing bamboo from the garden after the homeowner bought it thinking it could be controlled. There are other good privacy screen plants. Talk with your local nursery about what is best for where you live. I would probably not talk to the same guy at the nursery who told you you could control bamboo.
Reply:I've read bamboo spreads fairly quickly. The question you should ask yourself is "Do you really want to spend time controlling it?"
Reply:No, take that spreading stuff back! Unless that man is moving in with you to take care of it, he has just signed you up for trouble! Clumping is best if you just like the stuff - it will spread a little by seed but you can control that will a hoe now and then or spend 1/2 hour each year pulling up the little sprouts. In some colder areas even the spreading type is not as invasive, but "not as invasive" will still be a head-ache over time. The roots are also very strong, so growing it inside a plastic-lined shell or even a pot will eventually fail.

Put up some posts and tie a sparse lattice of branches to it - then let something like morning glory or trumpet vine or wisteria or climbing rose mount the branches - even cucumber or tomato vines will do. We do have some Nandina we use for screening in Zone 7 and it is a clumping Bamboo - we control it by removing their pretty red berrries right after Christmas so they do not finish up and fall to make more plants!
Reply:My thought is DON'T PLANT IT!!!!!!!!!! Go with an ornamental grass that is clump forming or rhizome forming. Here is some good pics: http://www.deansevergreens.com/catalogor...

Unfortunately you can't buy from these people, but alot of pics with names that you can research.
Reply:I heard on a gardening show to control bamboo from spreading where you do not want it to go, is to plant it in a container that you have buried in the ground and filled with dirt.

Other wise the roots will spread and you will not be able to control it.

How do I kill a bamboo-like weed???

This weed starts out really small with red leaves that evenutally turn green. It grows tall and looks like bamboo with large leaves on it. I've tried to just pull it out of the ground but the roots is strong. I've actually pulled a root up and its thick and fat and looks like ginger almost.

Its taken over 1/4 of the yard along the fences and shed. They've grown so big in just one week. I see them growing wild along the roads in the neighborhood in Bergen County.

Please help!

How do I kill a bamboo-like weed???
This is probably Japanese Knotweed and is one of the most persistent and difficult weeds to get rid of.

The best way to get rid of it is to spray it with a herbicide containing glyphosate. The leaves absorb the glyphosate and carry it to the roots. The problem is that if the plant has got a good hold (and it sounds as though it has) you will need to be persistent over more than a year. The advice on Wikipedia is to spray the plant thoroughly just before it flowers, presumably when it has buds. Be careful because glyphosate kills all plants but at least it is neutralised when it comes into contact with soil. Failing that you might like to consider drenching the soil with a solution of sodium chlorate but it will be a year or two before you can grow anything else in that postion.

Here is a link to confirm the identity.

Reply:you need to pull them out by the roots it is the only way.go rent one of those machines that cut the roots right in half and make it easier for you to dig them up i forget the name of it.but you can rent them at home depot.
Reply:Pull them out from the ground.
Reply:If you leave any roots, they will come back. Dig down very deep.

Reply:Hey Berrysport,

Sounds like Arrow-Bamboo. It grows by rhizomes that grow underground and can reach 20 feet out before coming up in the form of a shoot. It is very hard to control bamboo.

Flooding bamboo will kill it, but you have to have the roots emersed in water for several days - that could be very difficult for you.

Pulling the roots / rhizomes will help, but if you break just one, and cannot find where it went - you will continue to have the problem.

You can use Grass killing herbicides at all above ground occurances, on each stalk. Bamboo is a grass. A product like KILLZALL will do the trick - but you will have to keep after it. This year, next year and the year after. BTW, after using KILLZALL - you can replant in just a couple weeks. It is fairly safe as long as you follow label instructions.

The American Bamboo Society admits that bamboo can be difficult to control. There are special tools for maintaining bamboo gardens, and if you grow to like Bamboo like me, you will put 24" Deep root barriers, and contain it.

I treat it like it is a prisoner. Any plant in the area should not be transplanted elsewhere because there is the risk of having one root in the plant, and then it is out of it's controlled area.

Anyway, here is a web site for the:

Does anybody know anything about Bamboo?

I bought a bamboo plant at a nursery a couple weeks ago and when I did they put this wax stuff on each stalk. what is the wax and do I leave it on or take it off? Does it keep it from growing to big or what?

Does anybody know anything about Bamboo?
Don't worry about the wax, as you have already read above it's only temporary protection for the bamboo.

Bamboo is put into 2 categories. Non-Invasive "Clumping" and Invasive "Running"

Clumping bamboos (sympodial or unicaespitose) produce only a single culm, a vertical growing shoot, from each new rhizome.

Running bamboos (monopodial or pluricaespitose) send out a number of long heavily rooted underground rhizomes each year.

If you bought a "Running" Bamboo you should keep it in a pot and lift it above ground with a couple of bricks. That way you can cut off any "runners" and prevent them getting into your garden. Invasive bamboo can cause a lot a damage to footpaths driveways and foundations.

Some species of bamboo are prone to scale attack. Scale suck the sap out of the plant and sometimes it kills the host plant. They secrete a sweet waxy coating for defense that can cause black mould to grow. Keep an eye on that. If you notice ants around your bamboo that means you properly have Scale on your bamboo.

Bamboo is also part of the true grass family, which means from time to time you need to feed your Bamboo lawn food. If you don't your bamboo will start to lose it's rich green colour and go yellow.
Reply:If you are lucky, and if the nursery has any morals, you will have got a clumping variety. These are the non-invasive varieties that tend to grow in a small compact clump, hense the name. If you have an invasive variety keep it in a big pot and chop off the edges if it starts to choke itself.
Reply:The wax is to protect the bamboo from drying out. Do not remove it. The Bamboo will put up new shoots from the rings around the cane and from the roots.

Bamboo does not have any natural predators in this country. The roots seek water and will attack and destroy water lines and sewer lines. The roots grow so matted that Back Hoes can't dig through them. No pesticide has been found that is effective in killing or controlling it. That is why it is listed as a Noxious Invasive Plant by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Reply:The wax is a sort protection against bugs %26amp; fungus in your area. It will slowly dissinagrate by itself~ Do Not Remove Yourself as this is a protective coating to help your plant. Good Luck %26amp; You will see in a very short time that your Bamboo will reward you with UN~ Controlable Growth. Hope you picked a Big Spot for it.? sh204
Reply:I don't know anything about the wax but if you plant is outside be prepared for it to take over the whole yard and then your neighbors. Bamboo is very very invasive.
Reply:Be very careful where you plant the bamboo Mine was alright for a couple of years Now its a yeary battle all i can suggest every year dig round the clump to keep it under control

Some friends had a floating bamboo floor installed recently. It moves when you step on it.?

Is this normal? (BTW I think the bamboo floor is over a cement slab.)

Some friends had a floating bamboo floor installed recently. It moves when you step on it.?
If the concrete slab they installed it on wasn't perfectly level, there may be a hollow spot under the bamboo. This will cause the floor to flex at that spot, giving it a "spongy" feel.

I have this problem on one spot on my laminate floor. You learn to ignore it. If it really bothers them, they will have to take up the floor, and level it in that spot.
Reply:It should have a 1/8" cushion layer between the wood and the cement which will help stop the floor from slipping.

I just installed a floor and it was fine with no slips but it did have the thin cushion.

... just kidding
Reply:i don't think it is supposed to move when you step on it i would call the people who installed the floor.asap.

Reply:Good luck. I could never grow a Bamboo inside. I have 4 potted ones outside and they need a LOT of water. They like moisture on their foliage too. Inside most houses the air is dry not humid(unless it is the bathroom). If you do try, please take it outside once a week to blast all the foliage with the hose and to water so it can drain. If it is planted in a large container it will be a chore to move every week or so.

Good luck.

What is the difference between bamboo and other "woods"?

i know that bamboo is actually a tall grass, and decidious and coniferous trees are either hardwoods, or softwoods, but what are the differences in growing, and thier innter anatomy and phisology?

What is the difference between bamboo and other "woods"?
Bamboo roots spread out far from the plant near the top of the soil, and shoots from the roots become trees. Bamboo grows tall very fast and spreads aggressively. Of course, bamboo is hollow.
Reply:Bamboo is a monocot. This is very important to the vascular system of the plant. Considering it is a grass it also tells us that the meristematic regions of the plant are different from most other trees. Other trees have rings because the pro cambium (one of the meristematic regions) grows a new ring each year. Bamboo doesn't do this. Hence the reason that it is hollow and doesn't have rings. This is also a trait of it being a monocot. Try doing a internet search on monocots + meristem + bamboo. You might find some diagrams that will help. Monocot stands for monocotalydon. Don't confuse that with dicot or dicotalydon.

Is it OK to install bamboo over 5/8" plywood?

My subfloor is 5/8" plywood that was previously nailed and glued to the floor joists. Is this enough to nail down 5/8" bamboo flooring, or do I need to install another layer of plywood. Thanks!

Is it OK to install bamboo over 5/8" plywood?
5/8" ply glued and nailed is a pretty solid substrate, especially since the alternating grain layers in plywood keep it from too much thermal expansion and contraction. Walk all over it and make sure there is no creaking. If you find a creak, screw the plywood down to the closest joist to solve that problem. You may then want to put down a 6mm poly vapor barrier over the plywood if there is not one under the plywood. This will protect your flooring from moisture coming up from underneath. You should follow the manufacturer directions and nail every 8 inches. Every other nail may not hit a joist, but it will still land solid in the plywood making for a more sold floor.
Reply:As long as there isn't any noticeable flex the thickness of the substrate should be ok. If you have access to the joists from underneath you can always check them for issues, and shim.

Have you considered an underlayment?

Bamboo flooring is likely the most durable on the market today, of any flooring, and it's more widely recycleable. Good choice.

Steven Wolf
Reply:Sounds like you get the idea. Yes it would be ok, and this will strengthen your floor as well. I certainly recommend marking your joists first with a snap line so you are sure to hit them. As well it is OK to nail every 8 inches like suggested.
Reply:you should be allright with that - does the floor feel solid when u walk - make sure you get the nails into the joists
Reply:Here is anotehr DIY site that has great pics along his way, though I do not like the fact of the screwing method he used.1. it is more work, 2 More notiable. I would recommend carpet nails 2" 3/16th thick, pre drill, nail %26amp; set it, then putty the hole, which you will hardly notice. Here is the web addy.http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/floor...

You can by rosin paper, reddiah in color to lay ove rhte existing floor, 1 it acts as a vapor barrier %26amp; 2 will help avoid the rubbing of hte wood to avoid future squeks. If you have any now as mention b4 use screws to screw the floor to the joist. Follow the 8' instructions sie the nails are going or staples at an angle u will be fine. $15 hand $40 for air nailers to rent, a air one wopuld be the way to go.
Reply:you can lay bamboo as long as you put vapor paper down first, and yes you can nail between boards, the code is every 6 to 8 inches.

How do you raise a bamboo plant?

My poor bamboo plant is drying up! Help!

How do you raise a bamboo plant?
Most Bamboo grows in water instead of soil. Assuming yours is growing in water like mine do, Bamboo are hard to bring back once they start going south.

You said drying up? I wish you had been more specific. If the edges of the leaves are starting to go brown and crispy it probably just needs more water or could be in direct sun for an extended period. If the edges are yellow then it is too hot and needs to be moved to a cooler location.

A common problem with mine is one or more of the stalks will turn yellow and squishy. Make sure to remove those stalks when they get like that

Bamboo grows best in cool, indirect light and likes humidity, so if there is a window in your bathroom that would be best so the steam from the shower takes care of the humidity.

Once a month you should drain out all the water in the container, rinse the rocks and the submerged stalks and put fresh clean water in it.

Also remember bamboo has roots too like any other plant, so if it starts to get too crowded in the pot you'll need to put it in a slightly bigger container.

Hope that helps! Good luck.
Reply:teach it right from wrong, and hope you have done a good job for when it's time for it to leave home!!!
Reply:This depends upon if it an inside (potted) or outside plant. Realize that the culms (canes) will turn brown at the end of a suitable growing season. This will happen even with plants grown inside.

Bamboo is usually started from planting a rhizome. If you have a potted plant, it might be root bound. Transfer the rhizome and root to a larger pot. A large shallow pot is better than a narrow deep one. Make sure you have soil that will drain properly.

Place the pot in a tray containing pebbles and water to keep humidity high. You can also manually spritz the plant (like you would a fern) or use a humidifier.

How to get rid of bamboo>?

I have tried everything to get rid of the neighbor's bamboo which comes to my back yard, Help

How to get rid of bamboo%26gt;?
Bamboo is in the grass family, and as such, many varieties of bamboo spread through underground rhizomes, underground shoots that they send out much like the Bluegrass that is in many lawns. To avoid their spread, you need to prevent the rhizomes from getting onto your property.

I would suggest you dig a 2'-3' deep trench along your side of the line and install a barrier to prevent them from spreading your way. Most of the rhizomes will be fairly shallow, just below sod depth, but some may be deeper, so to be safe, 2'-3' is suggested. Concrete works probably the best, since the rhizomes can be pretty tough and may penetrate through the HDPE barriers that are sometimes used.

Installing a 6"-8" wide by 2'-3' deep concrete mowstrip that is sloped at an angle should work well to contain this invasive pest. It should slope in towards your property at the top, and towards the neighbors at the bottom. The slope causes the rhizomes to grow up to the surface (or they will go down and can go under the barrier), and should contain them on the far side of the mowstrip. I suggest running it along the entire property line, since bamboo spreads so much and will eventually spread along the whole distance.

Don't us an herbicide on them until they are cut off from the parent plants, or you will kill the whole thing, and your neighbor might get very upset with you. After any rhizomes that have crossed the line have been cut off, any plants growing on your side should be sprayed with a good herbicide (Roundup should do the trick since it is a good grass killer and bamboo is a grass). It will suck the poison down into the root system and kill off the roots on your side. Multiple application may be necessary, and it will probably take 1-2 months for it to completely take effect. There is another product called "Aqua Master" that you inject directly into either the rhizomes or the stalks of the bamboo. Drill a hole and squirt it in, and let the plant do it's thing in spreading it to all connected roots and stalks. It will likewise take 1-2 months for a complete kill off. If you don't want to use a weed killer, you can try removing all of the rhizomes on your property, but you will likely miss some since they have quite a network. Another option would be to remove any growth as soon as it appears. It will continue to come back until the roots have exhausted all of their energy, so you will have to be really vigilant on removing any new growth as soon as it appears, or the roots will receive more food and be revitilized.

Hope this helps..
Reply:All you can do is spray the new shoots in your yard with round up.
Reply:Good Luck, as long as he still has it you will get it! Why don't you dig the shoots up and sell them off of ebay, at least you will get some profit from it!
Reply:dig up the dirt well below the roots of the bambo and place a 1/4 inch piece of sheet metal along the fence as deep as the hole to the top of it and fill it back in. Its a lot of work but short of napalm , you have to stop the roots

Can you put a Betta Fish with Lucky Bamboo?

can you add lucky bamboo to a fish tank that has a beta fish in it? has anyone had lucky bamboo with fish before?

Can you put a Betta Fish with Lucky Bamboo?
you can, but it's not a great idea. unfortunately, like bettas, lucky bamboo has rumors floating around about it too. lucky bamboo is NOT actually a water plant. keeping it in water for an extended period of time will cause it to rot and die. I'm pretty sure this would happen even fast in a heated tank (which yours SHOULD be because bettas are TROPICAL fish). of course that will fowl up the tank pretty fast, so not exactly good for mr. betta. besides that lucky bamboo is quite rough and can tear bettas fins.

Q %26amp; A - Betta in a Vase

Why Bettas Should Not be Kept in a Vase

Q: I've been reading about the craze of keeping a Peace Lily and a Betta splendens in a vase together. What do you think - is it safe for the fish?

A: The argument made for keeping fish in a vase is that pumps, filters, and other aquarium equipment, do not exist in nature. By putting the fish in what appears to be a natural environment the assumption is made that it is inherently as healthy as, if not healthier than, an aquarium. That simply isn't the case. It is true that in nature the Betta lives in shallow rice paddies and swamps. However those waters represent a complete ecological system, which cannot be replicated in a small vase. Rice paddies are shallow but are still part of a much larger body of water that serves to dilute toxins. Scavengers and bacteria present in native waters break down wastes and render them harmless to fish.

In nature the Betta lives on a diet that consists predominantly of insects and insect larvae. In fact, Bettas contribute significantly in controlling mosquitoes that abound in their native habitat. The Betta's digestive tract is geared for meat. Its upturned mouth is designed to grab insects that have fallen into the water. Although they may be observed picking for morsels on plants and rocks, they are not bottom feeders by nature. A diet consisting of vegetable matter may keep them alive for a while, but it is not natural or healthy. Over time they will slowly be starved of the proper nutrients, and more easily fall victim to disease.

Another factor that has been completely overlooked in the Lily-Betta combination is the element of water temperature. The primary reason Bettas in small bowls are often listless is because the water temperature is too low. Bettas are native to countries such as Thailand where the climate is hot and moist. The ideal water temperature for the Betta is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Although they can survive at lower temperatures, they become lethargic and may even refuse to eat. Unless you live in a very warm climate, the water in a vase cannot be maintained in the upper 70's to lower 80's. Subjecting the Betta to cool temperatures is the same as if you or I had to live in a house where the temperature that didn't rise above 60 degrees.

Lastly, there is the issue of how the betta breathes. Like other fish, the Betta derives oxygen from the water. However, it also has special organ that allows it to breathe air directly. Its upturned mouth allows it to easily gulp air from the surface, and therefore survive in waters that are low in oxygen. If the Lily vase is not properly set up, there will be insufficient open space at the top of the water for the Betta to reach the air. As the oxygen dissolved in the water is used up, the Betta will need to breathe air more often. Should it have trouble reaching the surface, it may become deprived of the oxygen it needs to survive.

The Peace Lily-Betta combination is clearly a popular fad, but it is neither natural nor healthy for the fish. A dog or cat owner would never consider shutting their pet in a small closet with minimal heat, food, and air. The Betta should not be treated any less humanely.
