I' m so bad with plants, but a friend had given me this

very nice bamboo plant. I have only had it about a month, and it's all yellow on the stems. I have it in a little water with rocks around it.

the plant that is called "lucky bamboo" is not actually a real bamboo plant but a draceana. They make cuttings of this draceana plant and root it in water and decorate with gravel but these plants can't live forever in water alone--just like when you make a cutting of a plant you can often just leave it in a glass of water and roots will appear, you then plant it in a pot of dirt to grow on. So since this 'bamboo' is actually a cutting there must always be water in the pot. changing the water at least once a week is good to prevent it from getting moldy-just let the tap water run into the pot and overflow for a while to flush out the container-also use warm water-not ice cold or hot. You can also add a bit of diluted fertilizer to the water once every couple of weeks after flushing out the old water. As for sunlight these draceanas grow in full sun in their native habitat but have become popular houseplants because they can TOLERATE lower levels of light like those found in the home. it is best to at least keep the plant near a window. A window where there is no sunlight is fine but make sure it is in front of the window, that there is no curtain to block the light from reaching the leaves and that it is preferably no more then 2 feet away from the window if it is a small/medium sized window. Make sure this area is comfortably warm and doesn't over-heat or get too cool. If the whole cane is yellow and stinks when you put your nose right up to it it has probably rotted-it should also feel kinda mushy. if this happens it is a goner and is best thrown away-this happens sometimes even in the best circumstances as like i said it is not the best growing environment but water chages should help prevent this from happening.

Lastly remember that this situation is only temporary although i have heard of some keeping these plants in water only for up to 5 years-eventually it is best to take it out of this pot and plant it in a plant pot (with a hole in the bottom) with dirt. You can always choose an oriental style flower-pot and put little stones on the top to keep the lucky bamboo 'look'. once it is growing in dirt you must let the dirt dry almost completely before watering it again so the roots stay healthy. good luck!
Reply:Too much sunlight. They need very little light and NO direct sunlight. Change the water once a week maybe add some bamboo food once a week also.
