Do you HAVE to have a bamboo mat for rolling sushi?

Today I went to the japanese grocery store and baught some rice vinigar and some sushi rice and roasted seaweed. I dont have the wooden bowl, flat spoon thingy or the bamboo mat.

Can I still make sushi?

Do you HAVE to have a bamboo mat for rolling sushi?
You can use a dish towel for rolling your nori maki
Reply:Yes. just roll it between your hands after wrapping with saran wrap.
Reply:The wood is good b/c the sticky, sticky rice won't stick to it when wet.

You might could try using plastic wrap.... you use the mat to assist you in rolling the sushi up nice and tight. Plastic wrap might suffice instead, but take care to wrap tightly.
Reply:Sure you can! The mat helps get the roll nice and tight, but you can do the same thing with wax paper. You might need to replace the wax paper after a couple of rolls, as it gets a bit soggy, but it works just fine. I made sushi at a friends house once and didn't have my mat-the wax paper worked so well, that I often don't bother with the mat.
Reply:idk i dont eat sushi...yukk! no offence but u prolly dont have to have a bamboo mat u can just use another thing similar to it
Reply:Yes or you end up with jacked up sushi. It won't roll correctly or tightly.

Go to your local bookstore like Books a million or Barnes %26amp; nobles. They often sell sushi making kits for less than 10 dollars. YOu will get the book, chopsticks and the all important mat.

Once you use the mat you'll never use anything else.
Reply:Sure you can. You can use a damp cloth covered with saran wrap instead of the bamboo mat.

When you make the rice, and pour the sugar/rice vinegar mixture over-- use a shallow basin or bowl, toss the rice with a large spoon, and ideally, fan it so that the liquid evaporates and the rice doesn't get mushy. Don't over mix- that's what the wooden paddle and bowl are for --but you don't need that.
