I use river stones (they add minerals to the water); crystals do not. For many years I add water when low, change water completely and wash the jar when not smelling fresh,

and periodically I wash all the stones, when cloudy, that is all. ENJOY!
Reply:I have two lucky bamboo sticks in water crystals for over a year already. The crystals, once they are filled with water will for one hold your bamboo upright in a wider container and secondly will slowly release the needed water back to the plants. You just need to add more water when you see the crystals shrinking (from releasing the water to your bamboo). If you use the crystals in a glass container I also think it looks decorative. I find the bamboo to be one of the lowest maintenance plants to have in my house. Living in Arizona I don't put the plant directly in the window but about 6-8 feet away from the window. If you choose to use the water crystals, you should be able to find some in gardening stores. I purchased mine from Watersorb:

Enjoy your lucky bamboo!
Reply:well, i chnage the water once every week and wash the pebbles when they get cloudy and to enhance the growth of lucky bamboo i also put a special jelly in the jar.
