bamboo can be a problem on residential property if not grown and controlled. What are the problems?

How to grow and control bamboo?
I've got some on my property and I wish I hadn't. It grows like a wildfire and is just about impossible to kill. It can send new shoots out many yards from the original plant. It is very difficult to control, to the point where I don't know that I've ever seen it done successfully.

The link below has some suggestions:
Reply:Cut them and sell them as a novalty huck finn fishin poles.
Reply:It is way easy to grow in warm climes but will spin out of control when you least expect it. The 'roots' grow just under ground and will run up to ten feet before sprouting upwards, (about every six inches) along the runner. Compound this about twenty different directions and you will be living in a forest before you know it. The only way I have ever seen it successfully controled was by 'trenching' around it about 10 inches down and making sure you have found and pulled up all runners on the oppisite side of the trench.

Looks cool if you have an asian theme in your home, though.
Reply:It spreads by undreground root system and can take over an area and is hard to control and get rid of
