Can I install bamboo hardwood floors over linoleum?

I am installing bamboo hardwood floors in my kitchen, which currently has two layers of linoleum. Can install them over the linoleum or do I have to tear it out?

Can I install bamboo hardwood floors over linoleum?
tearing it out is the best way to do it
Reply:to install a bamboo floor you need a SOLID surface to put it on. PVC changes according to temperature and with age it crumbles and loses elasticity. tear it away and install it on clean, hard surface
Reply:If it's an engineered board, you could float it over the linoleum. If it's a solid board, you *could* install it over the linoleum IF the floor under the linoleum is wood. It would probably be best to nail straight into the wood sub-floor, just so you're guaranteed a good hold, so the floor doesn't come up over time. I would suggest taking up the linoleum. Especially if you're kitchen connects to another wood floor, as there will be a height difference.
Reply:As you will be nailing the bamboo down, I can think of no reason why you would have to lift the lino. If your floor is in good condition, it should be fine. Many flooring contractors would put down an underlayment and screw it down every 8" or so to ensure a good foundation before the lay the floor. Measure to ensure you can still get your dishwasher in after the floor is installed. Don't make the mistake of laying the floor to the dishwasher and then stopping. There have been many a dishwasher that is used for storage because they couldn't get it out to repair or replace it.
Reply:Can you? yes...nailed to the subfloor.

If you are extending to another room you should take out the linoleum tile for leveling purposes.

I would suggest taking the time and removing the linoleum. This way you check for possible water damage (since it's in the kitchen), and you can secure any subfloor squeaks. There's nothing worse than laying a new floor and having squeaks that could have been taken care of before hand.
