Has anyone planted bamboo in a cold climate with success?

I live in SE michigan, zone 5, a relatively cold climate. I have a damp back yard with clay soil. I have put up cherry trees and arbor vitaes to try to make a screen.

The cherries died, and the arborvitaes look like they are about to die as well.

How about bamboo?

Has anyone planted bamboo in a cold climate with success?
The bamboo will do so well there you'll wish you never planted it. Seriously, it will do fine at your location.
Reply:It sound as if its not what you are planting but the conditions in which you expect the plants to grow. I don't how The North of England compares with SE Michigan. but unless you give plants some positive conditions to grow in most will wither and die. Try to improve the soil, by the addition of good compost and look through web-sites like the Royal Horticutural Society's to find plants and trees that will thrive in that position.
Reply:You can stick harvested bamboo into the ground.
Reply:well...try it...we have some in our farm..near a river...i think they can grow in a cold climate because in our town it rains almost every day.yet bamboos are still green and as usual beatifully swaying with the wind
Reply:i knew you were good for giving SOMETHING besides your normal thing, so thanks for the two points. I am SO glad I offended you to the point of cloning me, I am SOOO flattered....lol
