I got a bamboo plant, it's green and has a stem / leaves coming out of the top...help!?

When I got it the plant was in a vase of water. It has wee thin brown roots. I put it in a vase at home but wonder if I can plant it in a pot of dirt? I have no idea how to care for it...how different are types of bamboo? This one is about the size of a stem of asparagus, totally green except for those yellowish brown rings here and there.

Any help so appreicated!

Bamboo plants are not to be planted direct over a pot of dirt, as these basically require enormous amounts of water to live. Best bet is to leave the plant in the same vase you received it, and once a week simply wash off the roots, change water and place it back on the same vase.

In time and when the plant grows, simply get a larger vase.
Reply:babe you got a lucky bamboo plant, the easiest to care for. Just keep water in it and it will live, its meant to be in water like that. just replace all the water once a week and keep the roots covered. if you want you can put it in a glass with colored rocks in the bottom, put ribbon around the glass, decorate it, make it pretty.
Reply:It is usually called lucky bamboo, and I have never planted on in soil, only in water, search the internet for specifics
Reply:You can transfer it to a container filled with potting soil. Water it with a Miracle Grow solution, until the soil is damp. The yellow rings you see are from a lack of nutrients in the water. follow up with watering once a week, and you will see improvement. The yellow rings will go away over time. Bamboo grows quickly, and will multiply, so do make sure your container is a little on the large side to accommodate plant growth. Happy gardening to you!
Reply:my sister keeps her bamboo in a vase full of water and river rocks. the plant is huge and she does nothing to it at all. hope this helps.
