How often does bamboo flower??
Bamboo's long life makes it a Chinese symbol of longevity, while in India it is a symbol of friendship. The rarity of its blossoming has led to the flowers' being regarded as a sign of impending famine. This may be due to rats feeding upon the profusion of flowers, then multiplying and destroying a large part of the local food supply. The most recent flowering began in May 2006 (see Mautam). Bamboo is said to bloom in this manner only about every 50 years. In the gregariously flowering species the interval from germination of the seed to the next general flowering establishes the life cycle, which seems to be fairly constant. Life cycles have been determined for certain species as follows:

Arundinaria falcata= 28-30 Years

Bambusa arundinacea= 32

Chusquea abietifolia= 32

Dendrocalamus strictus= 32

Bambusa tulda = 35-40

Melocanna bambusoides= 45

Bambusa polymorpha= 60

Phyllostachys nigra= 60
Reply:Bamboo flowers very rarely, and when it does that means it's reached the end of it's life cycle and time is right for the next generation.

However, Moso is said to always be flowering somewhere in the world, and there is sporadic flowering that does occur. Many Fargesia nitidia are in flower right now, as are a few other boos including Bambusa ventricosa. A bamboo buddy of mine has a species in flower that has produced viable seed. He contacted the ABS (American Bamboo Society) and was told that there have been no reports mass flowering, so this is a localized case. There was also a large clumper that produced viable seed about 40 miles from me, and the seedlings produced from this is growing nicely!

So it is possible to get seed and sometimes you get lucky just finding or knowing someone. Find out where your nearest chapter of the ABS is and contact them...they might know of a source.

You can also try eBay, but many of the bamboo seed sold on there may not be what it is claimed to be....buyer beware!
