What if my bamboo steamer is moldy?

My bamboo steamer has a little mold around one of the top edges. Is there a way to clean it, or should I just throw it out?

What if my bamboo steamer is moldy?
Bamboo does not harbor bacteria or mold. If you have a little around the edge, it's from previous use. As someone wisely noted, just give it 15 mins with a 50/50 mix of bleach and water, then wash as usual and it'll be fine.

After reading some of these responses, I'd be shocked if some of these reactionaries don't replace their refrigerators every time a piece of fruit goes bad in them. Does no one ever clean anymore? It appears to be a lost art!
Reply:toss it
Reply:Just buy another one, and be sure to keep it clean. I wouldn't take th risk to use the one with the mold on it, cleaned or not!
Reply:bamboo is porous, it may not harbor bacteria but it doesn't mean you can get it out of all the cracks and crevasses. so just get a new one. and keep it dry.between uses
Reply:NO!!! Throw it out. You should never clean stuff, you should just throw it out. I always throw away stuff away when its dirty. Like plates, glasses, houses. Whenever my house gets dirty I bulldoze it and build a new one.

If it's only around the edges I wouldn't worry about it. Soak the edges in bleach and that will certainly kill the mold. Also, don't let mold freak you out. Unless you are a very sickly person a little mold never hurt nobody.

In the future make sure you store the steamer in a well ventilated place and without anything holding moisture down over it. This will prevent the development of mold.
Reply:Throw it out.. Now!
Reply:throw it away
Reply:Steamers arn't that expensive and I'm pretty sure healthcare is. Just throw it out you can't mess around with mould, you can never be sure what type it is that's leaving it's baby spores in your food!
Reply:clean it smartone.
Reply:bleach. very bad to have mold. try using a tooth brush with a tiny bit of bleach. Rinse right away. Also, you could try a bit of softscrub with bleach. and same thing tooth brush, and rinse right away. also..... wash with soapy water. let dry

good steaming.
Reply:Spray it with a half and half solution of bleach and water, scrub it as good as you can and then rinse it real good. If you can't get it all clean, you'll have to toss it and get a new one.
Reply:i'd rather eat mold then soft scrub!

you may try washing it with a mild biodegradable soap, scrub the areas that are moldy, rinse well, and finally steam it for about 10 minutes in good ole filtered water.
Reply:Clean it with bleach and if that don't work throw it out
Reply:Throw it out. The mold is in the bamboo not the surface. Mold also harbors bacteria. It isn't healthy to use it.
