There is a broken bamboo plant 10 feet high...?

There is a broken bamboo plant (grass family) 10 feet high, the upper end of which being broken touches the ground 3 feet from the stem. What is the length of the broken part?

Think of it as a triangle. The height of the triangle is 10 feet. The base of the triangle is 3 feet. Then use Pythagoras' Theorum!

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Let a = 10' and b = 3'

(10')^2 + (3')^2 = c^2

100 square feet + 9 square feet = c^2

109 square feet = c^2

c=sqaure root of 109 square feet or 10.4403 feet
Reply:About 1,2 meters (not feet).
