Can you add bamboo to your fish tank?

I have a 10 gallon tank and i wanted to know if I could add my "lucky bamboo" into the water?!?!?!?!

I have 2 platies.

If I can should I put the roots under a layer of gravel, or should I put the roots on one of the ordaments? And do I need to get it any special like plant food or anything like that?? THANKS

Can you add bamboo to your fish tank?
If the bamboo has access to air, it's fine. It is not a real aquatic plant, but a bog plant that will die if fully submerged. Keeping the tops exposed at all times will keep it healthy. Until it's tall enough to put in the gravel, you could just float it or put it in a vase or breeder net.
Reply:Lucky bamboo, like other Dracaena, is relatively slow growing and prefers lower light level than many plants. It does grow well in hydro setups, but it does not like its leaves submerged for extended periods of time. I have some growing in soil and in water. The ones in soil seem to grow more than the ones grwoing in water. I tried adding one to a tank, and its stalk turned yellow after about 6 months. I was able to reroot a new growth. Good luck!
Reply:YES! its very safe it does not need air i have 5 fish tanks had them for 5 years with bamboo! well yeah.........im bored well anyways cool question and it can be sub merged in water. my fishes, when it gives birth, the other fishes try to eat it...........CANNABASLISM!!!! but, the baby fishes hide around the bamboo so yeah...... uhhh no problem well toodles! LA-LA-la-la!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:I've actually read that bamboo can be poisonous to fish so I wouldn't recommend it.
Reply:Bamboo is very safe. But i'd add real aquarium plants. They are VERY cheap at wal-mart.. What isn't?
