How do I identify what type of bamboo I have?

I have a bamboo grove that is near Grrenwood, SC. I am researching harvesting, selling, using it but i don't know what species of bamboo it is. The poles get to be fairly tall, probably 20 feet or so(maybe more), couple inches wide at base, hollow and green. Any help is appreciated.

What you have described covers probably half of the bamboo species worldwide.

Most likely it is a Phyllostachys species. Being that you are in SC there are not many tropical clumpers that grow in your area except maybe a few of the Bambusa multiplex varieties.

Your best bet would be to get some really good pictures of the culms, shoots, etc and post thes questions over on the bamboo forum at http://bambooweb.info/bb/index.php . There are plenty of people there that may be able to ID it for you, and I'm pretty certain there are a few boonuts on there that live in SC that can help you out even more.
Reply:take a chunk to zoo, hide it in your pants so that it is inconspicuous. Go to the panda cage. Whip it out, looking like you aren't doing anything, and stick it in the pandas mouth. if he likes it, you have narrowed it down. If he doesn't, shove it back in your pants and move along.
