How do you kill bamboo so it doesn't grow back?

My neighbor's bamboo keeps sprouting in our backyard. We've tried cutting it, pulling it up, and spraying weed killer on it. Any suggestions?

Reply:Purchase a panda bear
Reply:Dig a trench about 6 inches along your fence then insert bricks, bamboo sprouts an inch below ground only. I collect bamboo.
Reply:Bamboo is incredibly difficult to kill. The only way to eradicate it is to dig it all up - roots and all. Doesn't sound like an option if it's in your neighbor's yard. I've heard of landscapers installing metal flashing below ground to halt or contain the plant, but I fear this is only temporary.

You best bet might be to just keep pulling up sprouts when they appear, like you're doing now. Some people go to court over bamboo, we did a lot of research when we were planning on putting it in our backyard. Every landscaper tried to talk us out of it, 2 suggested we get a signed waiver from our neighbors! They were the ones that told us about various litigation from angry neighbors. We opted for different plants.

Good luck, sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Reply:The best thing to kill the bamboo just put a propane or kerosene and light it up with a lighter. That's what I did in my bamboo tree in the Philippines.
Reply:HA HA HA... good luck, I have tried bleach, ground clear, stump killer.. and finally the Zoo told me to just buy a Koala.... right... anyway, accoring to the ZOO director, if you have bamboo, learn to love it. The root source growns down to 25 feet and can spread out another 50 from the original source. My bamboo is now quite lovely. I keep it trimmed as a hedge at waist high with my hedge trimmer. Seriously, I bought a chain saw and cut it down 4 different, back breaking times.. (I have a ton of it) and the only other suggestion i found is to get a back hoe, dig it out at 26 feet down, then put in a pool... Its easier to just keep it trimmed at waist level!
Reply:To successfully remove bamboo, James suggests stabbing a small shovel around the base of the plant. Gently lift the shovel to remove as much of the plant as possible. Then thoroughly inspect the soil to a depth of about a foot, and remove any roots that remain. "If you leave behind even the tiniest bit of root or rhizome, you'll have more bamboo," says James.

If a neighboring bamboo is infiltrating your yard, there are several ways to treat the problem. Keep in mind that the rhizomes are like underground stems and can travel long distances as well as under fences. Rhizomes must be removed with a sharp tool. You can mow the young shoots to maintain some control, but you'll have to mow often.

Withholding water is another method that works fairly well, but often the most aggressive bamboos may not be deterred and may simply grow at a slower pace.

And there's one more technique you may or may not want to try. "You can always eat your bamboo shoots if they are among the number of bamboo that produce a great tasting shoot," James laughs. "But first you have to painstakingly peel the shoots and then boil them to remove the bitter taste and somewhat dangerous alkaloid. So as for me, I'll continue to grow all the bamboo I can but I'll get my shoots out of a can."
Reply:Kill the roots
Reply:The roots are at least a few feet below the ground, that's how it keeps sprouting (and moving).

As long as your neighbor keeps the bamboo, you'll just have to rip out the growth as you find it.

(I had the same problem with my backyard)
Reply:cut it and leave a stump... then put round up on it... it will kill anything
Reply:Leave the bamboo in direct sunlight and don't water it for about a month. I know from experience.
