Non spreading bamboo?

i am in need of a fast growing plant for a privacy screen, (new homes being built right by our back fence) Is non clumping bamboo a good choice, and if so which variety, and your experiences with it? Or a better suggestion for a privacy screen that will be columnar? needs to be thin and tall

Non spreading bamboo?
You are right in choosing bamboo as your privacy screen, but you really need a clumping variety to be safe. Bamboo is not invasive if properly planted, and many of the clumpers just grow outward slowly. I have many clumping bamboos planted on my fence line that are much better to look at then the neighbors house 6 feet past my wooden fence.

Your climate will determine what species you will need. If you are in an environment that doesn't see temperatures below 26F then you can plant most of the Bambusa species. If your temps get colder than that I would look towards some of the Fargeia species.
Reply:a FENCE---bamboo--grows like weeds...and will spread----
Reply:Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a non-spreading bamboo. It can take over your yard, and take years to completely irradicate as it spreads by underground runners. Also, it will spread underground to your neighbors houses and they might start a riot. (personal experience). Please please please do not plant bamboo. Ever. Unless you live in China. Then Do plant it, so pandas can eat.

I would recommend Italian Cypress. These tall trees are thin and columnar and smell great. Here's a site where you can see what they look like. I also recommend arbor vitae. It is a little more bushy, but great for a privacy screen. You can see it on the same site.
