How do i stop bamboo from spreading if i dug a trench and put in concrete how deep and how wide i need to go?
Boy, that stuff is difficult to get out of your grass! The only way we stopped it from popping up all over our lawn was to finally kill the hedge of bamboo we thought was so wonderful.

I would think you have to go several feet deep. Try digging up the runners you currently have to see how deep they run.

Good luck!
Reply:roots are deep it may still grow you would probably have to go about 15 feet deep in order for it too stop spreading....
Reply:I don't know how much you like your bamboo, but I had one in my yard that was sort of the centerpiece of the place. That is until it started sending out runners in every which direction. I've pulled up shoots as far as twenty feet from the mother plant, and found that they don't run under the sod, but through it. The only way to save the lawn was to dig up that cursed bamboo, and most of the lawn and just be rid of it.
Reply:I had a good amount of bamboo growing and stopped it by putting a block wall around it. I seeded the blocks with weed killer as I set them. I had it about 3 feet deep.
Reply:That stuff is relentless! I just bought a bamboo cutting board today, bamboo is 16% harder than Maple. Just some trivia!
Reply:I am not sure how deep you need to dig, but bamboo has shallow roots system(spread by rhizomes), so I would say 2 to 3 ft deep is sufficient. Pouring the concrete, thick galvanized sheet metal would be good to use as a barrier. Sometimes, bamboo can penetrate through thick plastic sheet, so I don't think that's good. Also, you might want to add a little height to the barrier, since bamboo might jump over it. Other thing you can do is to cut the new shoots and spreading rhizomes often. Next time, be sure to buy a 'clump type' bamboo. Good luck!
Reply:Depending on the variety, a trench may not stop it. My grandmother planted bamboo 50 years ago, and now it pops up in the yards of houses 5 blocks away. It's crazy. Also, her neighbour who had a pool, had to fill it in, because the bamboo kept piercing the concrete and lining and growing up into the pool!! Now the property is a dense forest with bamboo stalks about 1 foot thick. He moved and abandoned it!

Roundup herbicide has been the only thing that has kept it from taking over my grandmothers house. It stops it in its tracks. You cut the stem to the ground and pour the herbicide into the stem....kills it back somewhat, but doesn't kill the whole plant.

Good luck.
