What is the easiest way to remove bamboo? Please only answer if you have expereince removing bamboo.?

I understand you can keep cutting it down, or you can dig up the whole plant and remove it. Please only answer this question if you have had experience removing bamboo.

I have two clumps, about 10 ft high, in the back yard of a house I just bought. It looks fairly well established but each clump is only about 20 inches across on the surface.

I need to remove the plants because they have a negative effect on the resale value of the house, plus, I don't know what they are doing underground.

If I should dig up the plant, how wide a hole should I dig?

Thanks!

I am sorry to say that the ONLY way to get rid of bamboo is to dig it out. I had to remove 2 patches that were about 12x6 feet. It is very labor intensive. The majority of bamboo roots can travel down to 12-16 inches.

Digging down 18 inches would be a minimum that I would use.

I would go out at least 24-30 inches from the grass.clumps.

If there is a teenager on the block it is a great way to save your back and put a little bit of green in their pocket. Keep an eye out as spring hits and you might find a runner or two up to 4 or 5 feet away.

If there is a place that it might look good. (it does make a great wind break and birds love it). The way to control it is to dig a trench 24 inches deep and get metal flashing from a home improvement store and put that in the trench overlapping the metal at least 3 feet.

Reply:Get ready for a really labor intense job, We had to remove a back lot full of bamboo. The only way to remove it permanently is to dig it up. We had to use a dozer to get the roots becaue they ran so deep. If you leave any roots it will spread like crazy. But the job was well worth the result. We had tried roundup, cutting the bamboo down etc.
Reply:Bamboo spreads through the roots. Only way to get rid of it is by getting rid of the roots or killing it. You might try this. Take a lopper to the canes and cut them off as close to the ground as you can. Now using a mower, mow the canes every couple of weeks. If the plant has no green parts visible, it will eventually deplete its energy reserves in the roots and will die. You must be diligent in mowing (every week or two) and cut off all green shoots as they appear. Even so, it will require the better part of a year to kill the stuff.
