What to do with Bamboo Roots are REEKING?

When I drained the water, and the bamboo roots were REEKING, it made me a bit sick to my stomache.



I ponder now on whether does anyone know what I should do next as I did clean the roots and the stones (the kind that you see in a fish tank). No change after cleaning the roots and stones as they REEEEK!



Any hope or do I START OVER over again to practise on how to look after a precious bamboo plant?

What to do with Bamboo Roots are REEKING?
Not sure about bamboo, but with bulbs grown in water you add lumps of charcoal to the water to keep it fresh.
