Can i grow Bamboo? :) in Ohio?
Please, please, please do NOT listen to those who have already answered about bamboo being invasive. Sure the running types of bamboo (usually in the Phyllostachys variety) can be pretty nasty to you and your neighbors if not contained, but there are plenty of clumping bamboo's that can be grown that will withstand some frost and freezing and are NOT invasive.

Clumping bamboos slowly grow outward in a circular pattern and the circumference can easily be maintained through some simply pruning just like any other shrub or plant.

Also, do NOT go to your local garden center as most really are out to sell just what is "in" and will have no clue about growing bamboo.

One clumper that can withstand some serious low temps is Fargesia nitidia. This website here http://www.bamboogarden.com/ has many cold hardy clumpers that probably will work just fine.

You can also check out the "bamboo friendly" forums over at http://bambooweb.info/bb/index.php . I know for fact there is a guy growing bamboo in Wisconsin and Indians that hang out there.

Oh yeah, and as for size, depending on growing conditions and type, bamboo will be human size in a few years. I have one planted that went from about 2 feet tall to over 20 feet in just 3 years!

Reply:I would check this website out because it depends on what kind of bamboo.

Reply:Gee, I've been living in S.C. for nearly a year %26amp; have yet to see bamboo here in my city. Have fun growing it, as I see that someone told you that it's easy to grow. :)
Reply:Bamboo is a hardy plant to grow...however it depends if you get frost or not. Bamboo tends to be frost-tender with some varities, and just remember that there are many variety of bamboo on the market. The best thing to do is to go into your local garden centre and ask the assistance there if bamboo can grow in your area. They don't usually like being dried out and they are pretty hardy plants. They can handle being in full sunlight or part shade but usually not in deep shade....say around the northern part of your house. Again, just ask a horticultural assistant and they can direct you further.
Reply:Bamboo is cake to grow. In fact it takes over so easily so be careful. I bought a sprout of it and its sitting in a cup with like 3 inches of water. It stays alive and its just sitting inside. Its growing fine. I live in virgina. so id say yeah give it a go but be careful
Reply:it grows from bamboo's baby or something i don't know wat it called, but it came from the underground where bamboo grows. my suggestion for u is that u shouldn't grow it, cuz it's dangerous and it gonna waste ur land. and if in the future you want to move somewhere else you can't take it wit u cuz it grow as tall as 2 or 3 stories house.
Reply:Most people who have bamboo growing in their yards want to get rid of it because it spreads so quickly and is hard to get rid of. Be careful what you wish for. My area of the country has problems with Kudzu that was brought over from China for the sole purpose of erosion control and ground cover, and it has taken over the world down here.
Reply:you dont want to grow it because i have bamboo and it is very hard to control believe me dont grow bamboo
