Growing bamboo?

i bought what was called lucky bamboo at walmart, it was just a stick of it, the directions said to keep it in spring water, which i do, it was doing really well, but the other day it broke, it said with the directions that if this happens just add the broken piece to the water and it will develop roots and grow, but both pieces are turning yellow and rotting on the ends now, what happened, does anyone know what i did wrong or if i can save it, i like having it on my window sill above my kitchen sink........thanks in advance

As hardy and overpowering as bamboo can become, the type you bought,,,,SO WIDLY sold falsely as Lucky bamboo, is relatively fragile. It is meant to root in water and perhaps PEA gravel, but bamboo is not strictly a Hydroponic plant.



In the wild, or in a backyard Bamboo will and often does take over. It grows as it spreads, from one major POD/Root system, much like some species of palm.



As one answer states, just buy another. Yellowing and Rot are signs of it dying. Yes if healthy it can be propogated, but when you say BROKE, it means some trauma occurred.



By the way,,, Spring Water isn't strictly neccesary, and no matter how much people pay for bottled water, so much of it comes out of TAPS.

Reply:Weird! This is the only plant I have not killed! When the gravel looks dry I just fill it up with regular tap water and keep it out of direct sun light. Could be too much light.
Reply:Time to replace it that happens sometimes with bamboo you did not do anything wrong. Hpefully you do not have it in direct sunlight.
Reply:First, lucky bamboo is not in the bamboo family. It is in the dracaena family. Yahoo lucky bamboo. There is plenty of info. on the subject.
Reply:hey there want to know what you did wrong? most bamboo grows in triple canopy jungles. direct sunlight is hard on them. simple. thats your solution. try it =)
