I want to grow Bamboo in my back patio area. Is it true that if I just throw some bamboo back their that it will spread and grow on its own? If not what do I have to do, buy seeds or something? Help....BTW, I live on Long Island....
How do I grow Bamboo outdoors?

be careful because it spreads quickly and the root system is strong, once it is in it is impossible to get back out --- well not impossible but very difficult !
Reply:i don know
Reply:Think long and hard about this. Bamboo is very invasive, and you may get alot more than what you bargained for. The root system can be hard to get rid of. I don't know if it would grow in containers or not. But you would do well to research this!
Reply:You can put a small shoot of bamboo in the ground, and yes it will take off on it's own. But let me warn you, the root system goes on forever undergound and it will continue on and on. When you want to contain it to a certain spot, you actually have to dig a trench down at least 4-5 foot, where you want it to stay put, and fill with concrete, or constantly mow the surrounding area where you don't want it to go. If you just want it on your patio, maybe just buy a couple of super large pots and it will be contained in them.
