Im thinking of putting a siamese fighting fish (Betta) in a vase that has a bamboo plant. is it poisonous to the fish?
Is Bamboo poisonous to Siamese Fighting Fish?
no it's not poisonous, however it's not a true water plant and therefore will slowly die then fowl up the water.
also, bettas are tropical fish and do best (not saying they can't survive, but they won't THRIVE) in temps around 80*F which means you need a heater. the smallest heaters are 7.5watts and are for 2g
----
also, bettas do not live in cramped spaces in the wild, they live in rice paddies which are huuuuge, check it out:

Reply:LOL thats the craziest question ive ever heard from this sight. besides yesterday when some chick was wondering if it would be ok to cheat on her boyfriend with another girl..
your fish will be fine. i had a beta that lived 3 1/2 years once, there tuff.
Reply:Most generally any plant that is edible by most animals is not poisonous, and bamboo is edible....should be fine...and it should actually grow just fine in a water based container( itreally in style to do so right now) you should use Betta basic as it has a mild fertilizer for aquatic plants. Good luck.
Reply:not poisonous
Reply:only the purple variety.
Reply:no, but becareful with vases. make sure the top is open and u change the water at least once aweek.
For betta care. please see my website http://www.bcaquatics.com
Reply:Nope, u should be good.
Reply:Have the bamboo, the vase, and not the betta.
If the question was can I have a betta and some bamboo in a filtered, cycled, and heated aquarium of 5 gallons or more the answer would be yes.
A betta doesnt belong in a vase. Ever. Only utter schmucks with no sense of empathy would ever do that to a fish, its no better than keeping a puppy in a packing crate.
Ergo - bowls and vases theyre $hit for fishkeeping. Help change the stupid betta keeping culture and help fish to lead happy lives in better aquaria.
Vases, bowls, all low surface volume, all hard to fit filters too, all too small for stable water quality suitable to fishkeeping. Ill revise that opinion when someone shows me a 30 gallon bowl or vase with an integrated heater and filter and oxygenation.
Bowls are for cereal, vases are for plants and bettas are for proper aquariums. Dont be another mindless victim to fall in with the ranks of morons who keep bettas in tiny bowls, cups and vases.
Betta keeping culture has to change for the better!
Remember just because a million idiots keep bettas in tiny volumes of water doesnt make it right. A million idiots might decide jump off a cliff tomorrow, are you gonna join them? A billion muslims think its ok to prosecute a woman for being raped, and to have her face a stoning, do you think its a good thing?
The masses can be wrong, and on betta keeping they usually are. Help be one of the people being the wake up call instead of being part of the problem.
Get bettas into 5 gallons or larger with filters, heaters and oxygenation, enrichments like plants and bogwood. Be a good fishkeeper.
Reply:yes it is fine i have put bamboo in my betta fish tank but the bamboo will float
Reply:No, but do not allow the leaves under the water or it will rot. Also a vase is not the best suitable way to make a home for a betta. Lack of space and no easy why to clean it.
True, in the wild bettas live in very cramp spaces, but your home is not the wild.
