I want to grow Bamboo in my back patio area. Is it true that if I just throw some bamboo back their that it will spread and grow on its own? If not what do I have to do, buy seeds or something? Help....BTW, I live on Long Island....
How do I grow Bamboo outdoors?
Bamboo is an outdoor species (whether it is a plant or grass is a hot debate) so it should grow fine outdoors with plenty of moderate sunlight and plenty of water (it drinks it fast and is an extremely fast grower). I would buy several healthy bamboo plants first (not huge mature ones, but not tiny new plants either) and let them get established in their new environment. They are abundant growers so they should grow and fill out themselves and make sure you keep them trimmed for dead shoots often. I think trying to start bamboo with seeds would be too laborous and slow. You didn't mention whether you wanted to keep them as potted plants or plant in the ground. If you want them in the ground and to spread out, it shouldn't be too difficult and I'd get more information at a nursery first.
Reply:just put it in the ground ,
Reply:You simply get shoots..seeds?bamboo will not propogate from seeds..it needs cuttings/shoots..and in Long Island NY...I do'nt believe it will grow anyway..it needs lots of sunshine to thrive..You get too much snow and ice that far north
Reply:One caution about bamboo. It is very, very invasive. It will spread by runners and take over all the soil it can reach. You would do well to keep it is a large planter rather than put it in the ground. It takes a very strong and deep barrier to contain the roots if it is directly planted in the ground.
Reply:Use shoots... not sure about Long Island as far as climate... bamboo grows really well in the South, not so well in Northere areas... If you have seen it there though..... talk to the property owner and ask if you can have a few "babies" -shoots that started coming up. Since it grows so thick most people would not mind giving up a few to help you get started. We do the same with Lilac's where I live.
Reply:I wanted to do the same for the backyard but I was told that it needed its own watering system, ie., it needs to be given water continuously. Of course somone has to construct such a system which can be costly. I decided not to do.
Reply:the trouble is finding seeds or early shoots...everyone does not carry them
